The dock was presented at the Consumer Electronics Show today (Jan. 6) under the unimaginative name of Laptop Dock, but that name is likely to be changed before it goes on sale, Motorola spokesman Robert Schott told TechNewsDaily.
The Laptop Dock is designed to work with Motorola's upcoming 4G Android smartphone, the Atrix. Both the Atrix and the Laptop Dock will be available in the first quarter of 2011 through AT&T, Schott said. The company did not announce the pricing.
The Laptop Dock has a keyboard and an 11.5-inch (29-centimeter) screen, but no microprocessor. Instead, it relies on the Atrix's dual core processor running the Froyo build of the Android OS for all its computing.
With the Atrix connected, users can make calls and send text messages through the Laptop Dock, and they can run programs such as the Firefox web browser that are traditionally found on regular computers.
The Laptop Dock features two USB ports, a chiclet keyboard and a large trackpad. It weighs 2.5 pounds (1.1 kilograms) and has a laptop battery life of about 6 hours during normal web browsing, or 4 hours when watching videos.
