Blackberry Addiction Persists as iPad Fans Abound: Davos Diary
Robert Barnett loves his iPad -- and is addicted to his Blackberry. “I need the keyboard,” says the chairman and chief executive officer of Shaklee Corp., a private investment company based in Pleasanton, California.
ibuynow.com.au offer replacement laptop battery, laptop adapter, camcorder battery, digital camera battery, power tool battery, mobile phone battery and battery charger. All products are high quality, brand new with 1 year warranty!
Barnett is typical of the attendees bristling with devices at this year’s annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. While Apple Inc.’s iPad is ubiquitous among the web-surfing, one-finger-peck-and-typing, news-checking, note-taking crowd, and its iPhone a favorite for text messaging, Research in Motion Ltd.’s mobile handheld is still the e-mail device of choice, even among those packing all three devices. The computer laptop, though, looks like an endangered species.
“The Blackberry is still indispensable,” says Jamal Akl, group vice-president for sales at Greek engineering company Consolidated Contractors Co., who switched between checking e- mail on his Blackberry, surfing the Web on his iPad and taking notes with a Mont Blanc ball-point pen on a paper notepad during a panel on energy.
The WEF, well aware that its affluent and geeky crowd includes a lot of early adopters of new technology, has created a neat application that lets iPad-hugging delegates check for agenda updates, sign up for meetings and scrutinize the biographies of fellow attendees. This lets conference-goers avoid staring at each others’ chests trying to decipher identity badges to decide whether it’s worth engaging with whoever is standing next to you at the coffee machine.
Three Gizmos
“The iPad is the gizmo of the year and Davos has an app, so it’s great,” says Joe Saddi, chairman of global consulting firm Booz & Co. His Crackberry, though, remains close at hand. “I have a Blackberry, iPhone and iPad. They all have different uses.”
The plethora of gizmos most executives choose to bring suggests that no manufacturer, not even Apple, has found a way to create a single, one-stop solution that satisfies every need of the modern road warrior. For now.
“I still have my laptop as a backup and still use my Blackberry, but the idea is that they’ll be completely replaced,” says Robert Court, head of government relations and external affairs at Rio Tinto Plc. “The challenge at the moment is to have it all completely synchronized.”
No Keyboard

If Apple is willing to risk cannibalizing the market for its handsets by adding telephony to the iPad, it might be on the way to offering gadget nirvana. Still, the lack of a physical keyboard, with some people finding the touchscreen approach a bit tricky, might remain a deterrent to total domination.
“I still prefer the Blackberry as a phone and for quick e- mails,” says Sonali De Rycker, a London-based partner for venture capital fund Accel Partners, who also has an iPhone, iPad and laptop. “The iPad is still not perfect to type long essays, but it’s very close to perfection.”
Paul A. Laudicina, managing officer and chairman of consulting firm A.T. Kearney Inc., has solved the problem by buying a third-party keyboard that plugs into his iPad. He says he’ll leave his laptop at home on his next business trip and just use his Apple device. “I’ve gone from agnostic to avid convert in a very short period of time,” he says.
That kind of behavior hasn’t gone unnoticed. “Davos showed us the potential of the iPad as a serious business tool,” says Yu Lin, chief executive officer of NetQin Mobile Inc., a Chinese company that says it’s the world’s biggest provider of security software for mobile device users and plans to start focusing on iPad support. “It has obvious advantages in mobility: instant startup, long blackberry pda battery life and you don’t have to sit down to use it.”
One person who isn’t tapping at an iPad at Davos? Michael Dell, the founder of Dell Inc., who’s waiting until his company introduces its own tablet computer. “Stay tuned,” he says.

How to Replace a Motherboard in a Dell Inspiron e1505
At times some or all of a Dell Inspiron e1505's motherboard may go bad. The motherboard itself could fail or the components that are part of the motherboard (such as USB ports) could fail. In this case, you need to replace the motherboard. Replacing a motherboard on the Dell e1505 requires near complete disassembly of the laptop. You should be careful to document what parts and screws go where so as to properly reassemble the laptop after replacing the motherboard.
1. Turn the laptop over so the bottom is facing up and the hinges are facing you.
2. Push the battery-release latch down and hold it while you pull the battery away from the laptop. The battery latch is black and is labeled with a white picture of a battery. The battery is at the top of the right side of the laptop. There are a couple of ridges on the battery along the bottom edge that you can use to grip and pull the battery to the right and away from the laptop.
3. Remove the hard drive from the laptop. The hard drive is in the bottom-left corner of the laptop. Remove the screw in the bottom-left corner, along the left edge, as well as the screw about 1.5 inches above that one. Use the ridges on the hard drive to grip and pull the drive to the left and away from the laptop.
4. Remove the two rectangular plastic covers that are clearly visible on the bottom of the laptop. Each cover is held in place by a single screw at the bottom. Remove each screw and cover from the laptop.
5. Remove the two memory modules from the middle slot you opened up by removing the plastic covers in Step 4. The memory modules are held in place by two metal clips at the left and right of each module. Push the metal clips away from each other at the same time. This causes the memory module to pop up at an angle. Remove the memory module by pulling it out of the slot. Repeat this step for the other memory module.
6. Unscrew the single screw located just above the center of the top of the memory module slot, then push the lever located along the top edge of the memory module slot to the left. This causes the CD drive to stick out slightly on the left side of the laptop. Grab the part that is sticking out and pull it to the left to remove the drive.
7. Remove the modem and mini-PCI card from the slot located in the upper-left side of the laptop (this is the other slot opened up by removal of the plastic covers). There are two small circuit boards. The one on the top is the modem; the bottom one is the mini-PCI card. Disconnect the black-and-white cables from the bottom of the mini-PCI card. Push the metal clips on each side of the mini-PCI card apart, then pull the card away from the laptop. Remove the two screws securing the modem to the motherboard (one is on the left side of the modem, the other is on the right), then disconnect the modem cable by pulling the small tab up. Remove the modem from the laptop.

Get an Inspiron to Recognize a Battery
To get your Dell Inspiron laptop computer to recognize a battery, the Dell Inspiron laptop battery must be properly inserted into the proper compartment. If the battery is only half inserted or inserted incorrectly, your laptop won't recognize that the battery is connected and will not be able to use it to power itself. Once you get the hang of inserting your battery correctly, you'll be able to get your Inspiron to recognize and use the battery.
1. Verify that you have the appropriate battery for your Dell Inspiron laptop. The "Compatible Models" listing on the label of the battery and the box the battery came in should match the model number on your Inspiron laptop. For example, if you have a Dell Inspiron 1000 (which you can find by looking at the model number printed on the laptop case) your battery needs to be compatible with the Dell Inspiron 1000 for it to fit in your computer.
2. Turn your Dell Inspiron over so you can see the bottom of the computer. The empty compartment in the bottom of the computer is the dell inspiron 1545 battery compartment.
3. Insert your Dell Inspiron battery into the compartment. The metal connectors on the battery itself line up with the connectors on the inside of the battery compartment on your computer. The label on the battery will face inward, and you will be unable to see it once the battery is inserted. When inserted properly, you will hear a clicking noise, indicating that the built-in plastic clips have secured the battery into place. You will not be able to remove the battery without pulling on the lock release with your finger.
4. Turn your Dell Inspiron back over and open its lid.
5. Press "Power" to turn on your Dell Inspiron. Your Dell will now recognize the dell inspiron 1720 battery.

Solar Patent Hints Free Spurts Of Power For iPhone, iPad
As iOS devices become more advanced and powerful with each product cycle refresh, a major concern for Apple would no doubt be battery life. Now a new patent filed by the Cupertino-based company at the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) suggests a possible new solution in the works.
The patent explains that the implementation of these alternative charging source will cover the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and even their PC line (MacBook, iMac, etc).
While it may be too soon to expect this technology to be found built-in to the iPad 2 or iPhone 5 (expected to release in the next couple of months), we could see the iPad 3 and iPhone 6 utilizing it to recharge its batteries for free during the day when the device is furthest from the next charge on your nightstand at home. Or, if Apple decides to release it as a standalone accessory, existing iOS devices may also be able to take advantage of a longer sustained apple laptop battery life.

In a letter to the New Hampshire Attorney General office - first published by Softpedia - PenFed's lawyers reveal that the credit union discovered in mid-December that the laptop had been infected.
The malware permitted access to a database containing names, addresses, social security numbers, account numbers and credit and debit card numbers of PenFed members, joint owners, ex-members, staff and beneficiaries.
Around 514 New Hampshire residents are affected by the breach but the credit union says it has no evidence that the information has been misused so far.
The unauthorised code has been removed and PenFed has "identified the means by which the information was accessed and has taken appropriate steps to prevent this from recurring," says the letter.
Meanwhile, affected members are being written to with the offer of two years of free access to the Kroll ID TheftSmart service.

CES: Loving the Motorola laptop dock
LAS VEGAS--With its Best of CES Xoom tablet and an impressive selection of 4G Android smartphones, Motorola had a very good CES. Its Atrix handset won CNET's top award for the cell phone category, the Droid Bionic also packed a dual-core processor, and the gave us a design twist we hadn't seen before. But even with that show of force, Moto really delivered with its laptop dock. Though it doesn't make calls and it can't do anything by itself, it shows some innovation and creativity that none of Moto's wireless rivals brought to Las Vegas.
Dell Inspiron 6000 Laptop Battery
Battery Type: Li-ion
Battery Volt: 11.1V
Battery Capacity: 4400mAh
Battery Weight: 335.5g
Battery Color: Black
Battery Size: 209.40x71.80x19.80mm
Product Code: NDE030
Sale price: AU $78.99
Admittedly, you wouldn't think much of the laptop dock the first time you picked it up. Though it's paper thin, its bland design won't stand apart from your average netbook. And unless you have a phone in hand, it's little more than a large paperweight. Yet, the laptop dock isn't about looks or what's inside; it's cool because it harnesses your phone's power and puts it on a new level.
Designed for AT&T's Atrix, the laptop dock allows you to comfortably use the phone's media, browsing and messaging features for long periods. Just plug in the Atrix to the ports on the back and the laptop dock's 11.6-inch monitor takes over. You can see all of the phone's features on the larger screen and interact with them using the standard keyboard and touchpad. Also, the Atrix's Wep top app ensure a seamless transition back and forth. It's a simple and exceedingly user-friendly concept--and one that I didn't even know that I wanted--but it transforms your phone into a real computing device.
Great technology doesn't have to bring mind-blowing features or "the next best thing." It should, however, make existing products better and the laptop dock certainly improves the Atrix. The Atrix still is a phone, but when used with the laptop dock it's a better entertainment and productivity device. If I had a complaint right now, it's that the accessory is compatible only with the one handset. Though the Atrix appears to be a great phone by all accounts, Motorola needs to make the dock available for more models in its lineup. I also hope the company keeps the price to a reasonable level or even bundles it with the phone. Remember, Moto, the dock is all about convenience so don't take any steps to make it less so.

When using the laptop dock I could type messages much faster on the full-sized keyboard and get a better video experience than I would on the Atrix's 4-inch touchscreen. I could angle the display as I wished and I loved that I didn't get the eye strain that I usually experience after using my phone's Web browser for even a few minutes. The dock also offers stereo speakers and up to eight hours of battery life while delivering a steady charge to your phone. And since it weighs just 2.4 pounds you can take it almost anywhere.Great technology doesn't have to bring mind-blowing features or "the next best thing." CES 2011: Motorola Dock Turns Your Android Phone Into a Laptop
LAS VEGAS ― A new smartphone docking station from Motorola has a built-in keyboard and screen, effectively turning your Android device into a laptop.

Battery Type: Li-ion
Battery Volt: 10.8V
Battery Capacity: 4400mAh
Battery Weight: 433.76g
Battery Color: Black
Battery Size: 129.60x71.76x20.20mm
Product Code: NTB035
Sale price: AU $67.99
The dock was presented at the Consumer Electronics Show today (Jan. 6) under the unimaginative name of Laptop Dock, but that name is likely to be changed before it goes on sale, Motorola spokesman Robert Schott told TechNewsDaily.
The Laptop Dock is designed to work with Motorola's upcoming 4G Android smartphone, the Atrix. Both the Atrix and the Laptop Dock will be available in the first quarter of 2011 through AT&T, Schott said. The company did not announce the pricing.
The Laptop Dock has a keyboard and an 11.5-inch (29-centimeter) screen, but no microprocessor. Instead, it relies on the Atrix's dual core processor running the Froyo build of the Android OS for all its computing.
With the Atrix connected, users can make calls and send text messages through the Laptop Dock, and they can run programs such as the Firefox web browser that are traditionally found on regular computers.
The Laptop Dock features two USB ports, a chiclet keyboard and a large trackpad. It weighs 2.5 pounds (1.1 kilograms) and has a laptop battery life of about 6 hours during normal web browsing, or 4 hours when watching videos.

Foreign Lobbyists Fight Air Safety Proposal for Lithium Battery Shipments
An Obama administration proposal to designate lithium batteries as hazardous cargo has sparked an intense lobbying effort, and has brought the government into conflict with many staunch allies and close trading partners.
As the Associated Press reports, China, Israel, Japan, and the European Union have all lined up against the U.S. plan to reclassify the batteries, saying it would raise shipping costs for popular commercial goods such as cellphones and laptops.
Administration officials say that the worry is misguided, estimating that the regulations would impose costs of only $9 million per year. Concern about the batteries stems from their tendency to short-circuit and catch fire during flight, which results in blazes that are both very hot and difficult to extinguish. A United Parcel Service cargo plane crashed in Dubai in September, after an onboard fire that investigators believe was either sparked or exacerbated by lithium hp compaq business notebook nx5000 battery.
But foreign government officials and industry leaders say that the U.S. plan unilaterally imposes standards that would raise costs more than the U.S. is letting on and also create logistical headaches. Israeli diplomat Ohad Cohen told the AP that it’s better to work through international organizations rather than for one country to “impose a big impediment for trade.”
The proposal has sparked an intense lobbying effort by the countries and industries that would bear the brunt of the new costs. For instance, the French battery-maker SAFT hired former U.S. Transportation Department official David Kunz, who until 2009 served as chief counsel of the division that wrote the regulations, as one of their lobbyists.

SAFT is also building a factory in Jacksonville, Fla., just outside of the district of Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., the incoming chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
While originally written by the Transportation Department’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, the regulations are currently in the hands of the Office of Management and Budget. The final review of the proposal is now expected to be delayed for weeks or even months because of the pressure.
